Abortion

Articles Sermons

By Steve A. Hamilton

Introduction: On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court handed down an opinion in favor of abortions in the case of Roe vs. Wade. Before 1973, it is estimated that approximately 100,000 illegal abortions occurred per year in the United States. Since that date, the average has been about 1,400,000 abortions per year. There has been over 40 million abortions since 1973 in the United States. That is an average of nearly 4000 abortions each day. That equates to 21 abortions for every 1000 women! If you add the number of abortions that occur world wide, the world aborts as many children in one year as the United States has since 1973. Man kind is aborting approximately 126,000 children per day. That equates to one abortion per women.

If these numbers make you sick, what do you think God thinks of man kind today?

I. What does God think of wickedness?

    A. God has already destroyed a world of wicked people (Gen. 6:5-7).

    B. Fortunately for us, God promised he would not again destroy man kind on earth (Gen. 8:20-21).

    C. That does not mean wicked people will not be punished for their sins (Luke 21:34-36).

    D. Man defiles himself by his wicked deeds (Mark 7:20-23).

II. Is abortion wickedness?

    A. Under the Mosaical law, if you caused a women to lose her child prematurely from the womb, it was a capital offense (Ex. 21:22-25).

        1. Notice the unborn child, regardless of gestation, is called life!

        2. Job, while lamenting his losses, states that a fetus has life (Job. 3:16).

        3. In fact, God said life was in the blood (Lev. 17:11-14; Gen. 9:4; Deut. 12:23). The first blood cell that appears in a developing child in the womb occurs 21 days after conception.

    B. Therefore, to end a child’s life even in the womb, is murder (1 John 3:15).

        1. Take a good look at this picture (overhead on PowerPoint). The tiny hand of a fetus reaches out from a mother’s womb to clasp a surgeon’s hand. This child is 21 weeks old, an age at which it could be legally aborted. However, this child is having a life saving operation to correct spina bifida.

        2. When a doctor takes money to end a life, it is still murder (Deut. 27:25)!

    C. If abortion is not murder, then there must be a scriptural reason to have an abortion.

        (A) What reasons do women give for having abortions? (On PowerPoint with its source)

            1. Wants to postpone childbearing: 25%

            2. Cannot afford a baby: 21.3%

            3. Has relationship problem or partner does not want pregnancy: 14.1%

            4. Too young; parent(s) or other(s) object to pregnancy: 12.2%

            5. Having a child will disrupt education or job: 10.8%

            6. Wants no (more) children: 7.9%

            7. Risk to fetal health: 3.3%

            8. Risk to maternal health: 2.8%

            9. Other: 2.1%

        (B) The overwhelming majority of all abortions are done as a means of birth control. Are these scriptural reasons to end someone’s life?

III. Abortionist argue that women have a right to end unwanted pregnancies regardless of the reason.

    A. First of all, we must obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29).

    B. God says children are a blessing even if man says they are not (Psm. 127:3-5).

    C. Since God gives us the blessing of parenthood, we are accountable to God as to how we raise the children he gives to us (Eph. 6:4). How can we train and bring up a child whom we killed?

    D. As good stewards of the children He gives to us, we must faithfully care for them (Luke 12:42-46). Otherwise, we frustrate God’s purpose for that child.

    E. Abortion is the grossest form of child abuse and the most extreme perversion of parental responsibility. God will hold us accountable.

IV. Where do abortionist’s go from here? Do we think they will be satisfied to say it is a matter of free choice? Or will they start requiring abortions on demand? Sadly, it is already happening and not just in China but in the United States. (Forcing Abortion Article on PowerPoint)

Conclusion: We have clearly established that abortion is wrong. Abortion is simply murder. But even if it were not murder, it would still be sinful because of our lack of appreciation for the blessings God has given us and the gross abuse of our stewardship to raise those blessings. As with all sins in life, we must be willing to ask God to forgive our trespasses. If you have offended God and wish to ask His forgiveness, please come…
